Why bees matter

More than a jar of honey

Every hive we keep is a small engine of the ecosystem. Here is what pollinators do, what threatens them, and what we actually do about it.

We sell honey, but honey is really a by-product of something larger. Every hive we keep is a small working engine of the ecosystem around it — and in the Western Ghats, one of the most biodiverse landscapes on earth, that matters more than most places.

Here is the honest picture: what pollinators actually do, what is going wrong for them, and what a small Kerala beekeeping family can and cannot do about it.

The numbers

What pollination is worth

of leading food crops

Roughly three-quarters of the world’s leading food crops benefit at least partly from animal pollination — fruits, vegetables, nuts, coffee, cardamom and oilseeds among them.

of crop volume

About a third of global crop production by volume depends on pollinators. Staple grains like rice and wheat are wind-pollinated, which is why the figure is lower than the crop-count one.

More than 200 Apis cerana indica colonies and over 50 stingless cheruthen hives, pollinating the estates, homesteads and forest edges around them — not just filling our jars.

You will often see the line “one in three bites of food depends on bees.” It is a useful shorthand, but the more precise picture is the two figures above — pollinators affect a very large share of the variety of what we eat, and a smaller but still substantial share of the volume.

The problem

What is going wrong

Habitat loss

As forest and mixed farmland give way to monoculture and construction, the continuous succession of blooms that colonies need across a whole year gets broken. A landscape can look green and still be a food desert for bees.

Pesticides

Insecticides applied while crops are flowering kill foragers outright; sub-lethal doses impair navigation and memory, so bees fail to find their way home. Timing and choice of spray matter enormously.

Pests and disease

The Varroa mite has devastated Apis mellifera worldwide. Our native Apis cerana is the mite’s original host and tolerates it far better — one of several reasons we keep the native bee.

Competition from introduced bees

Large-scale keeping of imported European honeybees can crowd out native bees and wild pollinators for the same forage. Keeping native species is a quieter choice, and a kinder one.

Climate and rainfall shifts

Bees and blooms are timed to each other. When the monsoon arrives early or late, flowering shifts and colonies can find themselves out of step with the food they were counting on.

Loss of beekeeping knowledge

Traditional Kerala beekeeping — including stingless-bee keeping — has thinned out over generations. Skills that were once ordinary in a homestead are now specialist.

What helps, even in a small garden

Plant for the gaps

Bees struggle most when little is flowering. Tulsi, moringa, curry leaf, coriander left to bolt, and native flowering shrubs help bridge the lean months.

Never spray a flowering plant

If you must treat, do it after flowering or late in the evening when foragers are home. This single habit saves more bees than almost anything else.

Leave a shallow water dish

Pebbles for landing, topped up in the dry months. Bees need water as much as nectar, and drown easily in open containers.

Keep a stingless hive

They cannot sting, need very little management, and will visibly improve fruit set on a terrace or in a kitchen garden.

Buy honey you can trace

Adulterated honey rewards no beekeeper and no bee. Knowing which bees made your honey, and where, keeps real beekeeping viable.

Let a corner go wild

An unmown strip, a flowering weed left standing, a hedge allowed to bloom — small untidiness is habitat.
